The outlaw Guzaj, who put the fear of God into the unjust rich men and his enemies, was a friend or benefactor of the poor in our region at the end of the 19th century. The outlaw Guzaj can also be called the Slovene Robin Hood in a caricatured view. The marked Guzaj Path, where a hike is organised every last Sunday in August, leads from Prevorje through Planina to Dobje.
Along the trail you will encounter the beautiful Kozjansko landscape, well-preserved nature, rich cultural heritage, and the story of the famous outlaw Guzaj (1839–1880). For seven years his thefts and robberies spread across Styria and even into Croatia. His targets were castles, fairs, and parishes. With cunning tricks, he “lightened” the purses of many landowners, priests, and merchants. Lawmen hunted him from Brežice all the way to Vienna, but he eluded capture until 1880, when he was shot in Košnica near Prevorje.
On the Guzaj Path – Prevorje
A marked circular path in Prevorje leads past 15 interesting points. The hike starts at the Primary School Prevorje (Lopaca 3, 3262 Prevorje). You can also begin at the bus stop in Lopaca, about 600 meters from the school. Below the school stands a wooden sculpture dedicated to Guzaj and his beloved Barbka. The trail descends along the road, following signposts to the Bistrica River. You then continue upstream. At various points of interest—such as traditional mills—informational boards provide details. The road turns into a cart track and later a meadow path. Gradually you ascend to Puhorje (618 m), an outstanding viewpoint offering views of the hilly Kozjansko countryside, with Bohor, Planinski vrh, Sveti Križ, and Planina pri Sevnici clearly visible. The path then leads through the dispersed settlement of Žegar to the main road Šentjur–Kozje. At the inn, follow the road toward the starting point.
